Greek Council for Refugees
Athens, Greece

The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) is a non-governmental organisation which was set up in 1989 to assist refugees, persons under temporary protection and asylum seekers in Greece. It advocates and promotes measures for the legal and socio-economic protection of those who, fearing persecution, cannot return to their own country; it provides legal aid, psychosocial support and economic benefits to help them meet their basic needs and achieve self-sufficiency; it organises training and information programmes which aim at promoting the use of fair and efficient procedures in the examination of the requests of asylum seekers; raises community awareness about refugees' and asylum seekers' rights and needs, inviting community support and protecting this alien group from a denial of their rights; and it promotes measures furthering intercultural understanding and the effort to assist refugees to exercise their right to maintain their cultural identity while avoiding social exclusion.

Role
The GCR is one of the two social partners in CHICAM with particular expertise in issues relating to migration and refugees.
